Tank weighing systems · South Africa

Know what is in your tank. While the process keeps moving.

Richter Scale designs and supplies load-cell systems for tanks, silos, hoppers and process vessels—helping plants measure inventory, control batches and automate filling without interrupting production.

How tank weighing works

The vessel becomes the scale

Load cells are installed between the tank supports and foundation. The combined signal is conditioned, displayed and sent wherever the process needs it.

  • See total contents without opening the vessel
  • Track filling, discharge and material usage
  • Control batching by mass instead of volume
  • Integrate alarms, relays, analogue outputs or communications

1

Tank structure

Supports transfer the vessel load cleanly into each mount.

2

Load cells

Sensors measure the combined dead load and product mass.

3

Signal path

A junction box trims cells and carries a stable signal.

4

Control

Indicators, PLCs or controllers display and act on weight.

Final selection depends on gross vessel weight, number of supports, wind and piping forces, accuracy, material and environmental exposure.

Stable liquid inventory measurement

Tank weighing avoids density, foam and internal-condition assumptions that can affect inferred volume.

  • Stainless or environmentally protected load cells
  • Mounts with lift-off and side-load restraint
  • Local display with optional PLC or analogue output

Silo and hopper weighing

Compression or beam systems can track granular and powdered material through fill and discharge cycles.

  • Dead load, product load and dynamic-force allowance
  • Dust, outdoor and lightning protection considerations
  • Flexible connections to minimise piping influence

Weight as a control signal

Use live weight to stop filling, sequence ingredients, manage recipes or control discharge.

  • Batch controller or weighing indicator
  • Relay, analogue or digital communication outputs
  • Target weights, tolerances and recipe requirements

Survey before hardware

Existing vessels can often be converted, but supports, pipework, ladders and braces must be assessed first.

  • Photos or drawings of every support and connection
  • Empty and maximum filled vessel weights
  • Access, lifting and shutdown constraints

From vessel to verified signal

Good weighing starts with good mechanics

The load cells cannot correct for rigid pipes, binding supports or uncontrolled forces. The complete installation is designed as one measurement system.

1

Define

Product, vessel weight, supports, environment, accuracy and control outputs.

2

Engineer

Choose cells, mounts, restraints, junction box, indicator and cable protection.

3

Install

Prepare level foundations, manage piping influence and protect every signal path.

4

Calibrate

Commission with suitable test loads or an agreed material calibration method.

Applications

One measurement principle, many processes

Tank scales are used wherever mass gives a more useful, repeatable process value than visual level or inferred volume.

Frequently asked questions

What to know before weighing a tank

Can an existing tank be converted into a scale?

Often yes, provided each support can transfer load correctly and rigid pipes, braces, ladders or services do not bypass the load cells.

How is load-cell capacity calculated?

Selection considers the vessel dead load, maximum contents, number of supports, uneven loading, dynamic forces and a suitable safety margin.

Can tank weight connect to a PLC?

Yes. Suitable indicators and transmitters can provide analogue, relay or digital communications, depending on the control system.

Does a tank scale measure litres?

The system measures mass. Litres can be calculated only when product density is known and sufficiently stable for the required accuracy.

What affects tank-weighing accuracy?

Mechanical binding, rigid pipework, wind, vibration, temperature, poor foundations, incorrect mounts and unsuitable calibration can all affect the result.

Can the system be used for trade?

Trade-use requirements depend on the application and South African legal-metrology rules. Tell Richter Scale if the value will be used for buying or selling.
